Your Janma Nakshatra, or birth star, is the nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. It is used to choose a name, to time ceremonies and, at marriage, to match kundalis. This calculator finds it precisely and explains what it means.
What is a nakshatra?
Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into 27 nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each spanning 13°20′. The Moon moves through roughly one nakshatra a day, completing the circle in about 27 days. Every nakshatra is split into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′, and every nakshatra has a ruling planet, a presiding deity and a traditional symbol — Ashwini’s is a horse’s head, Rohini’s a chariot, Revati’s a fish.
What this calculator shows
- Your nakshatra and pada, and the Moon sign (rashi) they fall in.
- The name syllables (namakshar) for your nakshatra, with your pada highlighted.
- The nakshatra lord, deity and symbol.
- Gana, Nadi, Yoni and Varna — the attributes used in Guna Milan.
- Your sidereal Sun sign and Lagna (Ascendant).
- Your Vimshottari Mahadasha sequence, with the period running now.
- The positions of all nine grahas at your birth.
How your nakshatra is calculated
We compute the Moon’s position for the exact moment and place of your birth, convert it to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa used by most Indian astrologers and panchangs, and read off the nakshatra and pada. Everything runs in your browser — no birth details leave your device.
Don’t know your birth time?
Tick “I don’t know the exact birth time” and the calculator checks the Moon from midnight to midnight on your date of birth. If it stayed in one nakshatra, your birth star is certain. If it moved into the next one, you will see both, along with the approximate time of the change — family memory of “morning” or “evening” is often enough to decide.
Choosing a name from your nakshatra
In the naming tradition, a child’s name begins with the syllable linked to the pada of their birth star. Each nakshatra has four syllables, one per pada — Ashwini’s are Chu, Che, Cho and La; Krittika’s are A, I, U and E. A few nakshatras have regional variations, which the calculator shows side by side.
Nakshatras and kundli matching
Ashtakoot Guna Milan is built on the two Moon placements. Five of its eight koots — Varna, Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi — come from the nakshatras, and the other three from the rashis. If you know both partners’ nakshatras and padas, you can get a Guna Milan score even without birth times.
Vimshottari dasha in brief
The Vimshottari system divides a 120-year life into nine planetary periods, from Ketu and Venus to Saturn and Mercury. Your first period belongs to the lord of your birth nakshatra, and how much of it remained at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra. Astrologers use these periods to describe phases of life; treat them as traditional guidance and consult a qualified astrologer for important decisions.
