Before kundli matching, many families first ask a simple question: is either of them Manglik? This calculator answers it the way an astrologer would — from your exact chart, not just your date of birth — and shows every step so the result makes sense.
What is Manglik dosha?
In Vedic astrology, Mangal (Mars) stands for energy, drive and courage. A person is called Manglik when Mars occupies a house of the birth chart linked to the self, family, home, marriage, longevity or expenses — the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. Tradition holds that this fiery energy can bring friction into married life, which is why the dosha is checked before a match is fixed.
How this calculator works
We calculate the sidereal positions of all nine grahas and your Ascendant (Lagna) for your date, time and place of birth, using the Lahiri ayanamsa followed by most Indian astrologers. Then we count the house Mars occupies — using whole-sign houses — from three reference points:
- Lagna (Ascendant) — the most important reference, which depends on your exact birth time.
- Moon (Chandra Lagna) — your Moon sign, often used when the birth time is uncertain.
- Venus (Shukra) — the natural significator of marriage.
Many North Indian traditions count only the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses, while others include the 2nd. Use the switch in the form to see your result both ways.
How strong is the dosha?
- Not Manglik — Mars is outside the Manglik houses from all three reference points.
- Mildly Manglik (Anshik) — Mars is in a Manglik house only from the Moon or Venus.
- Manglik — Mars is in a Manglik house from the Lagna.
- Strongly Manglik — Mars counts from the Lagna and from the Moon or Venus as well.
Commonly cited cancellations
Classical texts and family traditions describe many situations in which the dosha is said to be reduced or cancelled (Manglik dosha parihar). The calculator checks the ones you will hear most often:
- Mars in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted in Makara.
- Mars in a Manglik house in particular signs — the 2nd in Mithuna or Kanya, the 4th in Mesha or Vrishchika, the 7th in Karka or Makara, the 8th in Dhanu or Meena, the 12th in Vrishabha or Tula.
- Jupiter or Venus in the 1st or 7th house.
- Mars sharing a sign with Jupiter or the Moon.
There is no single list that every astrologer agrees on, so these are shown as context and never change your result.
If you are Manglik
Because six of the twelve houses count, being Manglik is common — it is not a rare or alarming finding. The most widely followed tradition is to match a Manglik with another Manglik, as the two doshas are said to balance each other. Families also look at the 36 Guna Milan score, the rest of both charts and, most of all, at how well the two people understand each other.
For a decision as important as marriage, treat this result as a starting point and consult a qualified astrologer who can read both charts in full.
Why your birth time matters
The Lagna moves into a new sign roughly every two hours. If you were born close to a change, a few minutes can shift your Lagna — and with it the Lagna-based result. The calculator warns you when that is the case. The Moon and Venus checks are far less sensitive to time.
