The legal age of marriage in India
In India, a man must be at least 21 and a woman at least 18 to marry. These minimums come from the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, which applies across the country, and they match the ages in the Special Marriage Act, 1954 (used for civil and inter-faith marriages) and the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (which also covers Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists).
The age that counts is your age on the day of the wedding. If you are planning a ceremony close to a birthday, add the date to the calculator to make sure you’ll have crossed the minimum by then.
Why the minimum age matters
The law treats a marriage below these ages as a child marriage. The underage partner can ask a court to annul it, and the adults who arrange, perform or encourage it can face prosecution. Beyond the law, waiting until both partners are adults gives them time to finish their education, become financially independent and choose a partner freely.
Is the age for women changing?
In 2021 the central government introduced a Bill to raise the minimum age for women to 21, the same as for men. It was not passed, so 18 remains the national minimum. In 2024 Himachal Pradesh’s Assembly passed its own amendment raising the age for women to 21 in the state; because it changes a central law, it needs the President’s assent before it can take effect. If you live in Himachal Pradesh, check the current position before fixing a date.
How to use the age gap calculator
Enter the bride’s and groom’s dates of birth to see the exact difference in years, months and days, along with each person’s current age and whether both are old enough to marry. Names are optional — they simply make the result read more naturally.
- Same birthday? The calculator will tell you — it happens more often than you’d think.
- Leap-year birthdays: someone born on 29 February is treated as reaching a new age on 28 February in non-leap years.
- Planning ahead: combine it with our wedding checklist and budget calculator once you have a date in mind.
Does the age difference matter?
Many families have a preferred age gap in mind, but there is no rule that makes one gap better than another. Couples with large and small gaps build happy marriages. What makes the real difference is that both partners are adults who have freely chosen each other, and who agree on the things that shape daily life — where to live, careers, money, children and how to involve their families.
